In the Xhosa Culture Umtshato (marriage) takes place in line with traditions. The first process is Ukuthwalwa in which men are sent to the Bride's place to make their intentions known.

The family of the Groom send men to negotiate bride price in cattle or money, & they have to bring Vula Mlomo (mouth opener) traditionally in sheep but now can be represented with money, & once the Bride price is paid they are considered married.

One of the rituals is Utsiki in which the Groom's family prepare meat & sour milk which the Bride (Makoti) has to eat before being paraded to the community. The Makoti wears black doek (iqhiya) covering her eyes as a sign of respect. She wears an ankle length skirt to show she is now a woman, she also wears a shawl as a sign of protection around her.
